A new EU action plan to support the social economy

To mark the launch of the Social Economy Action Plan earlier this month, European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmit organize a hybrid gathering in Brussels to convene social economy stakeholders, including Philea member Mozaik Foundation (Bosnia and Herzegovina), represented by Vesna Bajsanski-Agić, Executive Director.

With the action plan to support the social economy the Commission proposes a new set of measures aimed at creating enabling conditions for the social economy to fulfil its potential to contribute to fair, sustainable and inclusive growth. In the spirit of wanting to achieve this goal through partnership and cooperation, the event brings together social entrepreneurs and representatives from social economy organisations from all over Europe (and beyond) to discuss the new opportunities offered by the plan.

Commissioners Schmit and Breton will attend and will answer questions from the in-person and online audience. Professor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhamad Yunus will join the event and share some reflections. Along with other social economy entrepreneurs from across Europe, Mozaik Foundation has been invited to share some of its innovative work to promote the social economy, and to outline the philanthropy sector’s view that the action plan demonstrates a clear recognition of our increased relevance as a sector at EU level. Social Economy Europe (SEE), of which Philea is a member, will take the floor through its President Juan Antonio Pedreño, marking another moment of recognition for our collective advocacy work.

(Philea), a convergence of Dafne and EFC, welcomed the publication of the Action Plan as a moment of celebration for the philanthropic and wider social economy sectors, who have long advocated for this policy. The action plan refers to the importance of improving the “enabling environment” for the social economy to thrive and acknowledges that foundations and associations encounter difficulties in enjoying the full benefits of the Single Market.
